Cost of Giving Birth W/o Insurance.. HELP?

Tue, Nov 24, 2009

Ask HFiQ

How much did it cost to give birth naturally without any medication?

How long did you stay in the hospital with no complications?

Did you have to pay the money for the birth before the actual birth, or could you pay if gradually after the birth.

Also, how much does it cost during the first year of a child’s life, not including the birth.

Thanks!!
After the birth of the baby he/she will be added to my boyfriends insurance. But maternity coverage is not on that.

i read somewhere that just the basics for a childs first year are about $7000. yes, seven thousand. and If you get on medicaid you can have it for free. Also, your local health department will give you all vitamins, info, and ultrasounds for free.

  2. GioVanni S Says:

the birth alone 3000 + and the rest will cost you about 10,000 + with doctor bills and everything else…Throw a baby shower.

  3. Nolagirl83 Says:

You really need to get some kind of insurance because it is very expensive…i ended up with a c-section..it was covered by my insurance but it was like 10,000…yes you can pay gradually but really try and get some type of insurance especially for your safety and the baby’s safety. What if something happens….

  5. lushlips05 Says:

Well a lot of states have health care for pregnant women. So if your state offers it then you dont have to worry abot the cost.

  6. jessicalmoreau Says:

you can get assistance with all that…..medicaid for you and the child…and then you can get wic….just go to your local health clinic and they can give you all the info

  7. Adrian Says:

    Get on Medicaid.

  8. Ashley P Says:

    birth costed me 7000.

first year of daughters life, i probably spent (or would have spent, had i not had WIC) 5000+, but thats including all the things like crib, clothes, too – not just formula and diapers

Look into state assistance. If you are without insurance you may qualify for state assistance. Go to your local social services office and see what they can do for you. When I was pregnant with my son, while I worked I did not have health insurance yet. I went to social services and qualified for medical. It covered all my doctors appointments(in regards to the baby) and covered my son for his first year.
It’s worth a try, the worst that can happen is you don’t qualify for assistance.

I am sorry, I don’t know, I live in Canada, and Thank God, health care is free. But as for how much a baby costs per year, here is a site that may help you out. good luck.

Babies are seriously expensive. I have not had a baby without insurance, but a friend has. She said that her total bill for the birth alone and the two day hospital stay was over $3500 and the pregnancy check ups and ultrasound cost her another $500 until the baby was born. So about $4000 together for her baby. For now, i would go to WIC and try and get approved, they will help you while you are pregnant for food and after they will help supply the baby with formula if you do not breast feed. Diapers are the most expensive thing you are going to have buy for the baby if you nurse or have wic for formula. The first year I would average for just diapers atleast $400 for diapers for the year. Then of course you still need a crib, rocker/infant seat, clothes, bottles (if not nursing), pacifiers, car seat, and stroller.

If you are not a high risk pregnancy and are really interested in natural childbirth, look into birthing centers. They are SO much cheaper than hospitals and you don’t stay there three days after. Mine sent a nurse to my home once we came back after the birth to help with any questions and I have found that midwives are much more accessible than docs. They only have the amount of pregnancies they can handle for every month and do a fantastic job with prenatal care (they actually answer questions and don’t try to rush you out). I would imagine that all of them have payment plans as you pay for the entire service – pregnancy and childbirth so you pay as you go instead of one big bill at the end. For mine (in CA) the whole thing cost a couple of thousand including pre and post-natal care, I think (I had insurance but I seem to remember it being around there for uninsured).
    Good luck

It depends on where you deliver. My birth cost $15,000 and was relatively simple – I only stayed until the following morning and was released. Natural birth, no complications. As far as how much money I spent the first year, we calculated all costs for the baby and spent about $30,000 on our first baby. And that’s not including the birth, just clothes, necessities, his stuff for his room, and not counting gifts from others – just the things we paid for. I did have coverage that paid my hospital bills but did receive them to know how much it cost. That was the discount as my hospital was a preferred provider to the insurance so they could only bill a discounted rate.

  15. Jomski, RN Says:

Your best bet is to go to a county hospital. They are usually cheaper depending on you income. The poorer you are the lesser you’ll pay, sometimes it’s even free. I know a lot of patients who qualify for free surgeries since their income is low to none.

  16. #4 is on the way!!!!!!!! Says:

I don’t know exact numbers but yes you can pay gradually after the birth. In the first year your baby should be covered by medicaid if you don’t have insurance (really until they are 18 years old) Also you may be able to get your pregnancy covered as well, check with your local medicaid office. There are usually well child clinics that are free or low cost for check-ups and you can get immunizations free or some cost like $2-4 at your local health department. Do check out medicaid. Good luck

geez….thank god i live in Australia…we don’t pay for our hospital stays…we don’t pay for giving birth..we don’t pay for operations …………all that is taken care of by medicare.

  18. white trash beautiful Says:

if you go to the hospital because you are in labor they have to take you and give you any medication you need and will work out a payment plan after you leave the hospital. im not sure how much everything cost but just about every pregnant woman is eligible for government assistance. i live in texas and we have medicaid here.

  19. ~HopeFully MomMy To bE~ Says:

Darn! get some help health insurance. Your pockets are going to be depressed when you finish paying.

  20. blue.sunshine08 Says:

Use as many resources that you can. Try to get WIC, Medicaid, Foodstamps, etc. Just dont abuse the system by lying about your income or anything like that.

Drug free sounds good but isnt always possible. An epidural alone ranges from 2000-3000. On top of that you can expect about 10grand or so for doctors, and hospital bill for you and baby.

If paying cash a lot of hospitals want a deposit up front and will work out a payment plan with you for the rest. Sometimes they want it paid before delivery and sometimes they extend it to make it work for you.

Diapers average $18 a pack and its easy to go thru that pack in a week. Formula is about $24 a can for the powder. Dont forget about clothes and everything else… car seat, stroller, crib, etc.

Also dont forget baby’s doc bills for the year- which add up because you have to go so frequently for check ups and shots.

    Good Luck

  21. micandema Says:

look in to getting medicad. They almost never turn pregnatnt woman down. Unless you make a lot a money.

  22. Ashley C Says:

Well it will always be expensive no matter what. However EVERY single state has medicaide or something similar. By law the states have to have something to help non-insured women. You just have to be willing to go down and sign up for it. If you would still like to know how much the cost of having a child are… My best friend just had a baby boy and she said that delivery alone (without the cost of medications, the charges of the room, and the c-section) it was 2500! And as for the first year of a childs life… Well expensive. If you dont breast feed formula will cost you roughly from 20-25 dollars about every 6 days. From the time they are born till about 5-6 months old babies tend to need to be changed about 4-5 times a day. Diapers cost about 15 dollars for a pack of 30′ish! (well here they do at least) Thats just to diaper and feed the baby too! Sorry if any of this didnt help!

  23. Chasity Says:

    You should try medicaid

  24. Melissa Says:

Look into midwifery. My midwife is amazing, she’s an EMT, and has emergency training as well as midwife certification, and she’s $500, no hospital bill because you birth at home. Chances of complications are decreased because of medical model causing many of them.

As for after the birth, Breastfeeding is free, and also very good for you and baby. Everything you need is debatable. I mean, what does a baby REALLY need? Does he need an $700 stroller? No. Does he need a swing and highchair and exersaucer? No. He needs a mom who loves him and can spend time with him. He needs a good car seat unless you take public transport, then you don’t even need that. He needs a moderate wardrobe, how much depending on how often you do laundry. Cloth diapers are reusable, and better for the planet anyway. Find a beginner pack here (http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/packages.htm) $60 for a day and a half worth, for $120, you can do a wash every other day and never buy diapers again. Society sells us this idea that you have to spend X dollars to be a good mom, and it’s nonsense. Kids don’t care about designer shoes when they can’t even focus further away than two feet.

See what you can find on freecycle.com.

    And good luck.
